CPR & First Aid

CPR/First Aid Classes

CPR – cardiopulmonary resuscitation – is a lifesaving technique that is crucial to a variety of emergencies, ranging from heart attacks to drownings. But is learning and performing this skill limited to just EMT’s and paramedics? Absolutely not. The national average for EMS response time is about 9 minutes, during which you may be the only helper nearby. These “Golden Minutes” can be the matter between life and death.

Being able to provide a pulseless patient compressions and ventilations during these Golden Minutes is absolutely vital. It’s far better to do something than to do nothing, as the difference between action and inaction could be someone’s life. To learn more about how you or anyone else can learn this essential skill, see below.

Our initial provider course is designed for people who have never taken BLS before, or who previously had BLS certification but their certification has expired. Our initial provider course utilizes a dual-delivery system for your safety and convenience. You will be required to complete online modules on Canvas with completion quiz grades prior to attending your scheduled class. During your scheduled class, we will briefly review skills taught in the modules, allow time for practice with our feedback manikins, and complete skills testing. You will also complete an AHA multiple choice exam on the day of your class.

Cost for both courses is $45 for Rice students, faculty and staff, and $65 for non-Rice participants.

On the day of your class, we will review changes in recommendations between the 2015 and 2020 American Heart Association guidelines, as well as allow time for practice with the manikins briefly before skills testing. You will also complete an AHA multiple choice exam on the day of your class. If you believe you could benefit from a more in-depth review course, consider taking the initial provider course instead.
