Rice University Emergency Medical Services (REMS) is an advanced life support (ALS) agency that provides emergency medical care to Rice University and the surrounding community. Our volunteer team of Rice students are all Texas-certified emergency medical technicians (EMTs), advanced emergency medical technicians (AEMTs), and/or paramedics. Thanks to generous funding from the university, all of Rice EMS’ emergency medical services are free.

REMS is ready to respond to campus emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 355 days a year. In addition to emergency response, REMS also provides standby EMS coverage at university events, such as public parties, sports games, Beer Bike, and more. REMS actively educates the Rice community in various public health initiatives, such as stop-the-bleed, hands-only CPR, and even BLS and CPR certifications. REMS also offers both Basic and Advanced EMT training courses and provides its members with monthly continuing education. Furthermore, REMS places and maintains 60+ AED sites around campus, helping keep our campus heart safe.

As a certified ALS service, our EMTs provide a wide spectrum and depth of emergency care. Once activated, our EMTs respond in specially modified EMS Chevy Tahoes and EMS golf carts. REMS provides cardiac monitoring, advanced airway management, and oxygen administration for critical emergencies. REMS administers emergency medications, including intravenous and intraosseous therapies, as needed for emergencies. REMS also provides bleeding control and splinting for traumatic injuries. All medical procedures are authorized by protocols written by our physician medical directors, Dr. Cameron Decker, MD and Dr. Hashim Zaidi, MD.
