Steps To Joining REMS

  1. Complete the EMT-Basic class at Rice or another accredited institution. If you wish to take the class at Rice, click here. If you wish to take a class outside Rice, click here.
  2. Pass the NREMT Exam. Pass both the skills and written portions of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Exam. To apply for your NREMT exam, visit the official website for more information.
  3. Obtain TX DSHS Certification. Following national certification, you must obtain a Texas license from the Texas Department of State Health Services. To apply for the cert, visit the TX DSHS website for more information.
  4. Email the Field Training Lt. Email remsfto@gmail.com or directly email the FTO’s rice.edu (Contact Us) with your interest.
  5. Complete the application and paperwork. Fill out this pdf application.
  6. Complete the necessary final requirements. 
    1. Take the online Protocols Test.
    2. Complete a minimum of 2 observer shifts with patient contact.
    3. Take the Patient Assessment Skills Exam.
