Steps to Joining REMS

How to Apply to REMS

  1. Obtain your NREMT certification. After passing your psychomotor exam, go to nremt.org to schedule your cognitive (written) exam. You can take this exam at a Pearson testing center anywhere in the country. You can find further instructions on the NREMT website. Please schedule this ASAP if you want to apply for the summer.
  2. Obtain your Texas EMT license. You can apply for a Texas license on the Texas DSHS website. There can be a long processing time of 4-6 weeks after submitting your application, so do not delay.
  3. Submit a REMS written application to remsfto@gmail.com. You can obtain a written application here. If the link is not working for you, contact remsfto@gmail.com and the application will be emailed to you. Written applications also require the following supporting documents: NREMT card, Texas license (or proof of application), CPR card, driver’s license, immunization records, and certificates for ICS 100, 200, and 700. Please submit your application and supporting documents as a single PDF. The written application should be placed first, followed by the supporting documents in the above order.

The Summer 2024 REMS application, with all supporting documents will be due on May 3rd, 2024 at 11:59 PM CST. There will be no exceptions for missing documents or incomplete applications. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to submit your materials early, so that the REMS Field Training Lieutenant has time to contact you if there is anything missing. After you have completed the above steps, you will:

  1. Take a written test on REMS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Clinical Guidelines. After submitting your application, you will be invited to a Canvas page with the REMS SOPs and Clinical Guidelines. You will have to review these documents, and then take an in-person quiz on them. There will be several slots for applicants to choose from to take their quiz
  2. Schedule an interview. If you are eligible for an interview based on your written application, you will meet with 2-3 members of the REMS leadership and/or field training team. This will also provide an opportunity to ask any questions you have about REMS.
  3. Complete a REMS Observership. If accepted into REMS, you will attend a REMS orientation, and then start taking shifts with the title “EMS Observer.” During this time, you respond to calls as a member of the REMS duty crew and are actively involved in patient care. Outside of shifts, you will be expected to take initiative in practicing your skills through training drills. (If you are offered a summer term observership, you must commit to being able to come to campus often for these duties.) You have 90 days to demonstrate competence, take a clearance test, and become cleared as a REMS Duty Crew EMT.

If you have made it through these steps, pat yourself on the back! Congratulations – you are now a cleared member of REMS!
