Command Structure
EMS Director
The EMS director is responsible for supporting REMS administration needs (budgeting, special projects, etc.) and ensures long-term projects (greater than 2 years) are completed.
Captain, Emberlynn Liang Liu
The Rice EMS Captain is the highest-ranking student in Rice EMS. The Captain is responsible for all patient care and operational aspects of the department, overseeing the work of the Lieutenants.
Liang Liu is a Brown College senior majoring in Civil Engineering. Outside of EMS, Liang stays active within her college by participating in team sports, steering committees, and serving in Brown's college government.
The Lieutenants and Assistants
The rank of Lieutenant/Assistant is given to members of the department who are responsible for managing different operational areas of the organization, and have additional responsibilities which include everything from scheduling special events coverage to running the HEAL 308 EMT-Basic course. More information on the different Lieutenants' and Assistants' positions and personal biographies, is available below.
Sarah Wu, Operations Lieutenant
The Operations Lieutenant is responsible for overseeing the major aspects of the daily operation of Rice EMS. Those include ordering medical supplies, purchasing and maintaining medical, non-medical and communication equipment, maintaining the Rice EMS vehicle and golf carts and ensuring a smooth daily operation of the organization.
Sarah Wu is a Will Rice senior majoring in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Sarah does research on molecular evolution in the Shamoo Lab. For fun, Sarah likes to read research papers, play tennis, and work on beating "expert" mode on DDR.
Stephanie Price, Communications Supervisor
The Communications Supervisor is responsible for tasks pertaining to communications, including the purchasing and maintenance of radios, pagers, and phones. In addition, the Communications Supervisor assists the Operations Lieutenant with her duties and collaborates with the Captains on announcements and communications from the department.Stephanie Price is a Martel College senior from Bellevue, Washington majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and German Studies. Stephanie does infectious disease research in Dr. Rudolf's lab, remains active in her college, and enjoys skiing, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
David Saidman, Special Events Lieutenant
Daniel Chu and Erol Bakkalbasi, Education Assistants
The Education Lieutenants/Assistants are responsible for managing the HEAL 308 EMT-Basic and HEAL 310 EMT-Intermediate courses, along with CPR and other educational classes.
Daniel Chu is a Brown College senior from Houston majoring in Sociology. Outside of REMS, Dan enjoys photography and likes to unwind by playing golf and watching TV.
Erol Bakkalbasi is a Hanszen College senior majoring in Biochemistry. Erol is currently serving as the Hanszen College president and is very active in other college activities. In addition, Erol works in Dr. Shamoo's laboratory, studying evolutionary changes in bacteria.
Haruka Maruyama, CPR Coordinator
The CPR Coordinator is responsible for organizing and overseeing the teaching of CPR, AED, and First Aid classes. In addition, the CPR Coordinator is responsible for maintaining and expanding the Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) program and handling all issues that pertain to AEDs on campus.Haruka Maruyama is a Jones College senior from Tokyo, Japan majoring in African Studies. Outside of REMS, Haruka is involved in the Rice African Student Association and works in the International Programs Office. Haruka loves cooking, traveling, playing Guitar Hero, and watching Japanese TV shows.
EMS In-Charges
The In-Charge is an operational rank, and refers to the EMT who is in command of a scene. The on-duty In-Charge responds in the marked Rice EMS vehicle that carries advanced medical equipment and ultimately approves all patient care decisions during his/her shift. The In-Charge is an EMT-Intermediate (meaning that they have Advanced Life Support training) and has the authority to administer certain medications that the duty crew EMTs cannot. However, the In-Charge most often supports the duty crew members as they propose and provide treatments.
Michael Pandya
Michael Pandya, a Sid Richardson College senior,is a Bioengineering major. Outside of Rice, Michael volunteers with Harris County Emergency Services District 1. Michael is also one of the founders of Rice's Venturing Crew, and remains active in the scouting program.Currently, the following five people serve as In-Charges: Michael Pandya, Sarah Wu, Liang Liu, Haruka Maruyama, Stephanie Price, and David Saidman.
