About This Site

Creation

The design of the site is loosely based off of the redesign of the Rice homepage, though the actual HTML content has been rewritten to be standards-compliant and to better fit the needs of REMS.

Technical Details

This site was designed to work with almost any curent web browser. Pages are written using standards-compliant XHTML and CSS. Most sections of this site do not require any special plug-ins or other software, but it should be noted that some linked documents are in Adobe's PDF format (requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader), and the top header image, though not an integral part of the site's content, is a Flash animation (viewable using Adobe Flash Player).

The day-to-day administration of this webpage is done using a content management system called CMS Made Simple. The Members' area of the website uses a piece of software called Employee Scheduler, designed by Brigham Young University. It has been heavily modified both to better suit the needs of Rice EMS and to integrate with Rice's single sign on service, NetID. Other applications used in this site include the buletin board/forum software phpBB and the the aptly-named phpCAS, a package that allows the PHP programming language to speak to Rice's Central Authentication Service.
