CPR/First Aid Classes

You’ve seen it in movies and television. It’s iconic of any medical emergency response. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, commonly abbreviated CPR, is a lifesaving technique useful in a wide variety of emergencies, ranging from heart attacks to near drownings. But is learning and performing this skill limited to just EMT’s? Absolutely not. The national average for EMS response time is about 9 minutes. Those few minutes may sound trivial but in reality can be the matter between life and death. Being able to provide a pulseless patient compressions in those golden minutes is absolutely vital. It’s far better to do something than to do nothing, as the difference between action and inaction could be someone’s life. REMS CPR Classes

cpr1Rice EMS is associated with the University of Texas Health Science Center’s American Heart Association Training Center, and is pleased to be able to offer CPR and First Aid Certification classes for interested individuals and groups on campus.

All classes are held on Rice’s campus in Duncan Hall 1042. If you would like to sign up, please sign up through this link here. Space is limited so sign up early! Please email remscpr@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns. Four classes are offered regularly:

Healthcare Provider class

This class covers adult and infant basic cardiac life support skills for healthcare providers and emergency responders (EMTs, medical students, lifeguards, etc).  If you are a healthcare provider and require certification, please contact us for details.

Cost for this class is $15 for Rice students, faculty and staff, and $30 for non-Rice participants.

HeartSaver CPR class

This class covers adult and infant CPR skills, including appropriate use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  Taking this course is a great way for anyone to learn specialized lifesaving skills and upon completion of the class, all participants receive a card, good for two years, detailing training completion.

Cost for this class is $10 for Rice students, faculty and staff, and $30 for non-Rice participants.

REMS will be hosting CPR this semester on the following dates and times:

Saturday, June 10 from 12 – 4pm
Saturday, July 15 from 12 – 4pm

HeartSaver First Aid class

This is a four-hour class that offers an introduction to basic life-saving skills including splinting, bandaging and bleeding control.

Cost for this class is $10 for Rice students, faculty and staff, and $30 for non-Rice participants.

REMS will be hosting First Aid this semester on the following dates and times:

Saturday, July 8 from 12 – 4pm

Hands Only CPR class

This 15 minute class that is great for a large group!  A one to two hour session can be scheduled, and anyone in departments, clubs, campus groups, or buildings can stop in for a quick introduction, or refresher, course on CPR and AED skills.  There is no charge for this class.  To schedule, contact remscpr@gmail.com.
